WHO IS SHAHID?

As I venture on an evening walk in my house, a thought crosses my mind: Most business execs and major players in almost every industry have one thing in common: dark pasts.
While some of them may muster up the courage to talk about them, most of them avoid the subject entirely. Why? Because it is a dark place no one wants to ever have to relive for any reason. But I’ll relive one more time just so you can see where I am coming from.

ABOUT SHAHID

BACKGROUND AND INSPIRATION

I had difficulties with speaking when I was little. I was a kid with a face deformity: the left side of my lips was raised upwards, affecting my speech but not the main reason for not speaking. My parents tried everything to help me, but nothing was working, this troubled them deeply until I was able to start speaking when I was 5.
I’m in high school. I am easily the oversized kid in my class. 6’3’’. Being the biggest kid in my class didn’t stop me from being bullied. At grade 10, I couldn’t take it anymore. So, I fight back. I get into a lot of trouble. More often than not, I find myself in a position where I’d have to defend and look out for myself. But it doesn’t always seem that way when a school staff sees us. They automatically assume I’m the oppressor, and punish me squarely for it with detentions.
My high-school guidance counselor says she is tired of seeing me get in trouble and if I keep going like this, I’m going to be a bum for life. Yeah, a guidance counselor told me that.
Are you surprised?

THE LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE

It’s February 2002. I squint and open my eyes, and suddenly realize that I’m lying supinely on a hospital bed, the doctor told me my heart stopped and I was seconds away from death. During the cab ride home, I could see the driver continue to look at me in the rearview mirror. He tried multiple times to speak to me, but I felt lost and confused, I was very shaken by the event and felt alone. This life-changing experience humbled me and helped me realize that my life is truly a gift.
Having the vision in my mind from my childhood to be a businessman, I continued to try but I see pile of disappointments, regrets, and failed business ventures. From delving into one business to another, I had not recorded any significant headway in life. I keep falling and failing.
It’s January 2008; I and my small family are perched in my brother’s basement apartment. The apartment is so small that the room, kitchen, and bathroom are 2 footsteps apart from each other.
I’m watching my son who is less than a year-old crawling around the small space. Behind me, my wife is seated on the bed, the only furniture in this room, her face sullen and void of happiness. She’s claustrophobic and this enclosed space turning her head inside out.
My son crawls over to me on the floor, and I lift him into my arms. I play with his cheeks and he giggles a bit. I let him be with his mother as I walk into the bathroom.
In there, I try to control myself but can’t. I have a meltdown. I wonder if I am truly the bum my high-school guidance counselor said I am always fated to be. I am scared, in huge debts, with a claustrophobic wife in this small space without any windows, and a child who has run out of places to crawl to. I remember the $3,000 I borrowed from my brother is almost spent, and with no source of income to pay him back. I am neck deep in the waters of frustration, multiple disappointments and regrets and pain.
This is not the life I deserve. This is not the life I want for my family, a family that sits on the cold floor to eat dinners, a family that feels caged inside this small basement. As I splash the water over my face, I encounter my eureka moment. It was brief but it was all I needed to shift levels. This is when I gave myself my word to be successful, to make sure no one feels this way.
